Discovering Self-Worth
Today we are witnessing the bankruptcy of self-worth in our culture. I know, it would seem with the proliferation of the rise of techno mediums enabling almost anyone to declare themselves a star, it would seem our culture would be deeply enriched and secure in self-worth. But, on the contrary it is this gross display of consummate self, that lays bare the privation of self-worth in our society.
I am an Instagram user, I love to post and share my nature photographs and connecting with other photographers in my genre. I was dumbfounded by the amount of self-indulgence by others on this medium to post nothing but, yes you guessed it, photos of THEMSELVES! Over and over again!
And what treasure are these self-seekers after? Followers! Why? Self-worth!
From Hollywood’s ‘stars’ to political up and comers to the sports arenas, everyone wants to be noticed, everyone wants to bask in the light of adoring followers.
I suppose what we humans desire most is—fame.
But the question is—why?
The answer is—-self-worth!
Many of us have experienced trauma in our early developmental stages that have distorted our view of ourselves. Whether sexual abuse, alcohol or drug abuse and its parental consequences, abandonment, divorce, and the list goes on of the traumas that begin to create a thirst in us to be noticed, to be valued, sometimes at any cost.
What we can agree on is this—-we are designed with a need for self-worth as much as any other need we experience.
The condition of our self worth steers our lives like a rudder on a ship at sea.
Let me leave you with this thought-Long ago King David wrote these words (I have taken the liberty to expand on the wording)—”I praise you O Lord, because I am reverently, affectionately, admiringly, spectacularly, amazingly, magnificently designed! Your designs are amazing!” Psalm 139:14
David understood the gravity of who he was, and whose he was! This elevated his self-worth because it was grounded in a connection—a relationship with his Creator!
God is not a respecter of persons. He loves us all with the same passionate, enduring love!
This is where the living core of life energy radiates with us all—with you my dear friend!
This is my first Blog entry on this subject. My blogs will be relatively short, and to the point. Please inform others who are struggling with this issue to tune in and find some wisdom on this subject that is common to us all.
